"Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats Recall"

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday the recall of one million foam baby seats sold at major retailers like Target, Wal-Mart, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Sears, and USA Babies.

According to the CPSC, there have been 28 reports of infants and small children falling out of Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats. Three children suffered skull fractures after their seats had been placed tabletops.

New Safety Packaging Needed

The seats sell for about $40 and are made by Bumbo International. In a statement on its website, the company said sales of the seats would be temporarily halted while the safety packaging was updated.

“The Bumbo Baby Seat is safe when used properly, but we have voluntarily agreed to update the packaging to ensure there is no confusion about the safe, proper use of the Bumbo Baby Seat,” the company said.

Bumbo International said the seats are intended for infants between 6 weeks and 14 months of age—from the time babies can support their heads until about 22 pounds. The CPSC said the seats, which are made of foam, should never be placed on a table, counter, or other elevated surface.

Recalled seats were sold from August 2003 through October 2007. Consumers can contact the company to request revised instructions and a new warning label.
