A horrendous truck accident in upstate New York has claimed the life of an elderly woman.
Donna Gibbs was killed when she pulled out in in front of a tractor trailer in Newstead, New York and investigators are not exactly sure why, according to WIVB. Fortunately, the three young children in the car, one a six-year-old and the other two aged seven years, were merely injured in the fatal truck accident.
However, two of the children are in critical condition, while the third is in stable condition.
Erie County Sheriff's Deputies said that the tractor trailer, which was hauling cars, was heading east on Route 5, going about 55 miles per hour. Gibbs, who was 65 years old, was attempting to head west on Route 5 and apparently didn't see the approaching truck.
The tractor trailer did not have a stop sign but skid marks reveal that the driver, who wasn't injured in the accident, tried to stop prior to the collision.
A woman driving a Jeep was also involved in the accident but only suffered minor injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,231 traffic fatalities in New York during 2008.
