For years, erythromycin has been used as a broad based antibiotic to treat bacterial infections and used in HIV positive individuals. The common use of the drug has been under the assumption that the drug was considered to be safe and effective. A new U.S. study that has been published in New England Journal of Medicine''s September 9th edition has reported erythromycin may be linked to increased risk of sudden cardiac death.
Case reports of sudden cardiac deaths in patients using both oral and intravenous doses of erythromycin have been made. Patients taking erythromycin had double the risk of dying from sudden cardiac death than people who were not taking any of the medications in the study. When taken in combination with a CYP3A drug, the risk of sudden cardiac death became a fivefold increase in the risk of sudden cardiac death.
The erythromycin study shows the importance of conducting studies on drugs that are older, as well as informing medical professionals of all drug treatments to avoid drug interaction. Investigators of the study concluded concurrent use of erythromycin and CYP3A inhibitors should be avoided.
