"Thousands of Elderly Die Each Year from Traumatic Brain Injury"

Approximately half of all fall-related deaths in the elderly are due to traumatic brain injuries, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2005, nearly 8,000 Americans over the age of 65 died of traumatic brain injuries suffered after falls and 56,000 were hospitalized.

Falls are common among the elderly for reasons such as:

  • decreased mobility
  • vision impairment
  • medication side effects, and
  • hazards like poor lighting and clutter.

Even though traumatic brain injuries are on the rise, they are frequently misdiagnosed in older people.

According to Dr. Ileana Arias of the CDC, traumatic brain injuries “can cause long-term problems and affect how someone thinks or functions. They can also impact a person’s emotional well-being.”
