Finius T. Flubberbuster’s, a bar in Hampton, NY, has settled in a wrongful death lawsuit. The case was just about to go to trial when the bar conceded and settled for an undisclosed amount instead. The lawsuit was brought against the bar by the family of Charles Bruce who killed himself by driving into a tree.
The estate of the man, including his domestic partner and three children, alleged that the bar’s behavior violated what is known as “Dram Shop” laws of NY and nearby Vermont. Dram Shop laws hold establishments liable for the sale of alcohol that leads to death or injurious behavior due to alcohol related accidents. The laws are in effect in 42 states in the US.
Charles Bruce was killed at approximately 4:30 am on November 10, 2002. He died in Sudbury, a small town in New York near the Vermont border. Mr. Bruce was killed when his pickup truck hit a tree.
