The racy billboard featured just the torsos of a buff and bare-chested man and a well-endowed, scantily clad woman along with the “Life’s short. Get a divorce” exhortation and contact information for Corri Fetman and Kelly Garland’s law firm. Placed in the Rush Street nightclub district sometimes referred to “the Viagra Triangle,” the billboard didn’t last a week.
Fetman made her objections to the removal of the billboard known, saying that, "They ripped our billboard down without due process…We own that art. I feel violated." However, city alderman Burton Natarus explained that, "It has nothing to do with content or anything else. They did not have a permit and they were ordered to take it down." Apparently the ad company used by Fetman’s law firm did not go through the proper channels at City Hall to get the correct billboard permits.
A Very Successful Marketing Tactic
Fetman said that since the billboard went up, her firm has gotten a hugely increased number of contacts from potential divorce clients. She contends that, "The [billboard’s] message is, if you're unhappy, do something about it…It's really no different than a motivational book that says, 'Live the best life you can — be happy.' " She expressed plans to do similar billboards again.
Others Are Less Than Impressed
Other attorneys in the area did not share Fetman’s viewpoint. Kimberly Anderson, an official with the Chicago Bar Association, noted that, "Some of my colleagues thought it was sleazy…We've got a bad enough reputation as it is, you know, without downgrading it even more."
