The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 124,000 Avanti water dispensers. The hot water faucet on the units has a child-resistant safety feature to prevent young children from accessing hot water. Because the device can malfunction, not allowing the faucet to turn off, burn injuries to children can be suffered. Avanti has received ten reports of the hot water not shutting off, and nine of the reports resulted in burn injuries, including a 10-month old baby suffering burns on his arms and chest.
Sold at Office Depot, Staples and other appliance and electronic stores nationwide from July 2000 through August 2004, consumers with small children with the defective units should immediately disable the hot water by turning off the red switch on the back of the dispenser and contact Avanti for a free repair.
