"Sexual Discrimination Suit"

A woman has won a $60 million jury verdict in a sexual discrimination lawsuit against the insurance company that formerly employed her.

Kelly Grant filed the lawsuit against Progressive Insurance Company over what she claims happened to her during her employment at the company's office in Normal.

The Suit

According to Grant, she was rising through the ranks at the company, but that came to a stop when she got a new boss. The new male boss demoted her and eventually essentially fired her.

Her last year at the company, she made $100,000 and she was moving up through the ranks. That came to an abrupt stop when the new boss came in, the suit states.

“Up throughout the ranks of upper management who were all men, and I was the only female manager in Oklahoma from the time I started in '96 to the time I was effectively terminated in 2004,” Grant said.

She said she gave the company many opportunities to right their wrongs before she filed the suit, but she was forced to file it because “they tried to lie about it.

The Verdict

The jury agreed that Grant was a victim of discrimination and their verdict, delivered last week, awarded her $60 million.

However, because of the cap on punitive awards in Oklahoma, Grant suspects that she will actually only receive $1 million, which will include her lost wages.

“Now this is vindication and redemption and hopefully a voice for women,” Grant said.

She says that even though the company will surely not have to pay as much as the jury thought would be fair, she is optimistic that the suit will encourage other women who are victims of discrimination to fight their employers and help end discrimination in the workplace.
