In the first national study of its kind, findings by sociologists from Rice University and University of California Irvine suggest racial discrimination is a major cause of poor health for American blacks.
The study was published in the September issue of Social Forces. The sociologists found black immigrants who arrive in America from black-majority regions of the world are healthier than those from white-majority regions, but the longer they stay, despite how healthy they may have been, the more their health erodes.
According to Rice’s Michael Emerson, the study’s findings show the effects of the persistent gap in health between whites and blacks in America, displaying how any previous health advantages black immigrants had before coming are lost as a consequence of racial discrimination in America.
Prior to 2000, national level health data combined all black immigrants into a single category. The sociologists noted that the study does not provide the definitive explanation for the black/white health gap in the U.S., but it does encourage a much closer look at how racial discrimination harms health.
