A civil suit has been filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against a Vermont Pizza Hut franchisee. The suit alleges that the recent firing of a 13-year store veteran with Down syndrome was unwarranted. The lawsuit follows the firing and purported comments by a Pizza Hut manager that were disparaging against people with Down syndrome.
The employee, 35-year-old Zachary Teller, was fired without any apparent reason or warning. The firing is seen to be a violation of Mr. Teller’s rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Mr. Teller worked as a dishwasher and kitchen aid at the Pizza Hut for 13 years before being fired.
