Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned and first fell ill in September. According to new tests, they reveal Yushchenko had more than 6,000 times higher than normal level of dioxin in the blood. The level of dioxin in his body is the second highest ever-recorded in human history. The concentration was about 100,000 units per gram of blood fat. A normal level of dioxin is between 15 and 45 units.
Abraham Brouwer, professor of environmental toxicology at the Free University in Amsterdam, where Yushchenko''s blood samples were taken for analysis, narrowed the search from more than 400 dioxins to about 29. Brouwer said he is confident his team will identify the poison by the end of the week.
It would have taken as little as one milligram of dioxin to cause the chlorance that disfigured Yushchenko, according to pharmacology experts. The most toxic dioxin of the group is tetrachlorodibenzo, the same dioxin used in Agent Orange.
