Three people were injured when a train plowed into a semi-truck in southwest Detroit on Tuesday.
The conductor of the Norfolk Southern train and his assistant sustained minor injuries in the trucking accident, according to the Detroit Free Press. The truck driver, who works for the Detroit trucking company Alco Transportation, was not seriously injured in the crash.
Police investigators are still trying to determine what led the truck to cross the tracks in front of the train.
The semi-truck accident was ironically timed, as Norfolk Southern's Operation Lifesaver train visited the area just weeks before. Operation Lifesaver was created in 1972 to promote public awareness of the dangers of train crossings. Specifically, the program aims to reduce the number of accidents involving motorists, pedestrians and trains.
According to Operation Lifesaver, Michigan was the 13th ranked state in the nation in terms of number of accidents involving train crossings in 2009. Last year the state saw 48 collisions and 12 deaths on the tracks. Texas led the nation in collisions with 177, while California was first in train-related deaths with 30.
