A construction crane and scaffolding buckled on a street in downtown Boston on Monday, killing three people near Emerson University.
According to witnesses, they heard a roar and saw the scaffolding crash causing a cloud of metal, boards, and dust.
Construction crews working on a 14-story Emerson University dormitory on Boylston Street were using the crane and scaffolding. The building has been under construction for almost two years and was supposed to open in the fall semester. No students were injured announced University Vice President of Public Affairs David Rosen.
Currently, fire officials don’t know why the crane fell. “The crane collapsed onto the street, why it collapsed I have no idea,” said Boston Fire Lt. David M. Pfeil.
One man, John Hynes, was driving on Boylston Street when he saw the crash right in front of him. “You could see it coming down and then I started rolling forward. It started to hit my care, and then I sped up,” Hynes said.
Hynes’ vehicle as well as a few others on Boylston Street were crushed.
“It’s very distressing,” Rosen said. “We’re waiting for the police and fire to investigate.”
