The associate director for science and medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Drug Safety, David Graham, told U.S. advisers “there really doesn’t appear to be a need” for COX-2 drugs.
Last September, popular arthritis painkiller Vioxx was recalled from the market because of increased risk of heart attacks and stroke, creating safety concerns about the entire class of drugs Vioxx belonged to, called COX-2 inhibitors. The Vioxx recall left just two other COX-2 drugs on the market – Pfizer’s Celebrex and Bextra.
Graham believes the heart risk is a class effect.
