A family of an 18-year-old man who died while in custody at a detention facility has received an undisclosed award after the facility agreed to settle with them. The settlement follows an additional $40 million awarded in 2003 to the family by the state of Texas, where the facility is located.
The Correctional Services Corp. (CSC) facility located in Mansfield, Texas was the site of the young man’s death in January of 2001. The man, Bryan Alexander, was incarcerated in the detention center after being found guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol. While at the facility Mr. Alexander became sick and was coughing blood. His symptoms lasted for many days before authorities transferred him to the John Peter Smith Hospital of Fort Worth.
Mr. Alexander was placed in the ICU and died two days later from a rare form of pneumonia.
The detention facility, a state-sponsored “boot camp” for young criminal offenders was found guilty of not providing timely medical treatment in this case.
CSC closed the facility six months after Alexander’s death. CSC also announced that it is merging with Florida based correctional services company Geo Group. The merger’s approval had been waiting for a closure in the Alexander lawsuit.
