Public Citizen consumer group urged the FDA today to immediately order painkillers Celebrex and Bextra off the market.
The two COX-2 inhibitor drugs manufactured by Pfizer Inc. have been controversial since Vioxx, another painkiller in the same family of drugs, was withdrawn by Merck & Co. last September. Vioxx was recalled after a clinical study found significant increases in heart attack and stroke risks in patients, and questions have been raised about similar concerns with Celebrex and Bextra as well.
COX-2 inhibitors have been widely prescribed as painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs with fewer stomach and intestinal side effects than older products like aspirin and ibuprofen. Instead, Public Citizen said the drugs are more expensive, more dangerous, and are no better at protecting the stomach than older medications.
Public Citizen warned patients not to use Celebrex three and a half years before the government announced a study showed increased heart risks.
