A woman living in Illinois has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Memorial Hospital, Cardiology Consultants and one of its doctors, claiming her mother died on behalf of medical negligence while in their care.
According to the lawsuit, Lucille Bailey had a cardiac pacemaker installed Feb. 2, 2007 by Dr. Atul Shah. Her daughter, Joyce Merrell, who filed the lawsuit on Bailey’s behalf, claims her mother complained of severe chest pain following the procedure.
According to the lawsuit, Dr. Shah ordered an echocardiogram to determine the cause of Bailey’s pain. After examining the results however, he confirmed he did not recognize any significant findings and had Bailey transferred to the intermediate care unit where she continued to complain of excruciating chest pain.
While under the care of the nurses, Bailey suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest, caused by an undetected pericardial effusion. She died Feb. 2.
