According to reports, hospitals throughout the state of California are under fire due to the amount of hospital errors that have occurred within the last year.
The Department of Public Health Patients claims that patients admitted to these hospitals are being injured at a high rate of about 100 per month.
Reported Hospital Errors
Several errors have been revealed in the past year including the one involving a technician at the Children’s hospital at Stanford University who accidently pumped too little oxygen into the lungs of a nine-day-old infant.
Another report shed light on the technicians at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz who confused CT scans and removed the appendix of the wrong patient.
These incidents are reportedly among the 1,002 cases of serious medical harm that has been reported between July 2007 and May of this year throughout the state.
Preventable Mistakes Prove Costly
These types of hospital errors, which are known as adverse events are considered preventable.
“I think these never events are a wake-up call to everyone about the safety of California hospitals,” states Beth Capell, a lobbyist for an influential consumer group.
