"60 Year Ban Lifted"
The California Supreme Court recently denied the state’s law banning same-sex marriage.
A broad decision was made that will invalidate any law that discriminates solely on the bases of sexual orientation.
Decision Allows All Californians Same Rights
The ruling declared that the state Constitution protects a fundamental “right to marry” and this will now be extended to same sex couples.
Chief Justice Ronald M. George proclaimed that any law, which discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, should be “constitutionally suspect” from this point forward.
Disagreement Regarding Decision
Catholic Bishop’s in the state of California and other opponents of same-sex marriage are publicly voicing their disagreement with the decision.
However, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated that he “respects” the decision that was made and doesn’t intend to overturn it in anyway.
The new ruling cited a 60-year-old precedent that denied a ban on interracial marriages in California, claiming it was just as unjust.
