The diabetes drug Byetta has been linked to the deaths of four more patients, according to a new report by the makers of the drug - Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. The Food and Drug Administration had linked the drug to two deaths in mid-August.
Byetta was approved to treat type 2 diabetes in 2005 and has since been used by over 700,000 patients.
In October 2007, the FDA reported 30 cases of pancreatitis among Byetta users. Acute pancreatitis is a potentially fatal condition with symptoms that include vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain.
Lilly stated that the patients who died also suffered from other conditions, including gallstones and leukemia. However, the company said Byetta could not be ruled out as a cause of pancreas problems.
The FDA stated in August that it was working on a stronger warning label for Byetta. In the meantime, patients who are taking Byetta and experiencing any symptoms of acute pancreatitis are urged to stop taking the drug and contact a physician.
