"New “Brazilian” Diet Pills May be Unsafe"

There is a new batch of diet pills popularly taken to lose weight called “Brazilian diet pills” that could contain damaging drugs that could result in serious side effects. Lab tests on several types of the Brazilian diet pills found high levels of amphetamines and other drugs.

There are reports of four women at Baptist Health South hospital in Florida failing a pre-employment drug test due to Brazilian diet pill related drugs. The women all thought the diet pills were harmless due to their “all-natural” ingredients.

Extracts of drugs similar to ephedra have been found in the Brazilian diet pills. Traces of diazepam (Valium) have also been found in some variations of the pills.

The drugs were seen to cause similar effects to ephedra diet drugs like raising blood pressure and possibly causing serious health risks like heart damage.

It is difficult for consumers to fully realize the extent of the possible damages of such diet drugs because their makers often tout them as being “all-natural” and “safe.” FDA officials caution consumers on being careful when taking such products. The products like Brazilian diet pills may contain extracts of certain natural products that could mimic the damaging health effects of ephedra and ephedra based diet pills.

In 2004 ephedra was banned for use in diet pills after several deaths due to the diet pills were reported. Early in 2005 the ban was reversed, but ephedra levels are limited.
