Boeing Co. has agreed to pay up to $72.5 million to settle a sexual discrimination lawsuit representing 29,000 current and former female employees at its Seattle area facilities. Four years after the sexual discrimination class action lawsuit was filed, the U.S. District Judge approved the deal that charged the company with giving women workers less pay and fewer promotions than male counterparts.
The attorney representing the female workers believes the analysis of Boeing''s workforce data was able to show the significant difference in pay between the female and male workers. A Boeing study that was acquired during the case displayed female workers usually earned $1,000 to $2,000 less than men. A 1998 internal Boeing report also concluded men were more likely to be hired into higher paying positions. As part of the settlement Boeing will monitor salaries and overtime assignments, as well as conduct annual performance evaluations.
The Boeing sexual discrimination settlement closely followed the $54 million Morgan Stanley sexual discrimination settlement to a few hundred women from earlier in the week. The majority of large discrimination cases are settled out of court.
