A woman whose child was born with half a heart has filed a lawsuit against her doctor and the maker of Paxil, alleging that the drug caused her son''s birth defect.
Paxil is a popular anti-depressant manufactured by Glaxo Smith Klein. Recently, however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement warning of the increased risk of Paxil birth defects when taken during pregnancy.
Lisa Collins Steele blames the drug for her son Chase''s heart defect. According to her claim, his birth defect “could have been prevented had her doctor warned her not to continue taking the anti-depressant Paxil.”
Chase, who is nine months old, is currently on life support. He experiences seizures and has to take numerous medications. His prognosis is uncertain.
“Most people shouldn''t go through this in a lifetime,” said Steele.
The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages, primarily to cover mounting medical bills. Steele may also seek punitive damages.
Another Paxil birth defect lawsuit was recently filed by a woman in Texas whose baby was born with congenital heart defects. Robert Kwok, Steele''s attorney, said there are at least 50 similar lawsuits throughout the country.
