"Maimed Biker Lawsuit"

A man who was in a horrible motorcycle accident allegedly as a result of a poorly maintained road has won $1.75 million in the settlement of his lawsuit against the county that failed to adequately maintain them.

Bradley Rowand claims that because the county failed to maintain the road, he was involved in a motorcycle accident that claimed his leg and forced him to spend 62 days in the hospital.

A Road in Disrepair

“This was a tragic accident, but the roadway was such that it should have been repaired a long time ago,” said Mati Jarve, Rowand's attorney. “A neighbor had put a sign up, saying, ‘Read my lips, pave our road.'”

Jarve added that the road on which Rowand crashed was more than 70 years old.

The county had received complaints, but they never fixed it up. Instead of repairing the road, the county “threw cold patch from time to time” into potholes, said Jarve.

The Crash

Rowand, then 20, was riding his Suzuki motorcycle with three of his friends, who each were on their own motorcycles. Rowand rode at the front of them all.

Rowand hit a pothole, which caused the front wheel of his motorcycle to wobble, Jarve explained.

“When he was thrown back, he took off like a shot into a metal pole,” said Jarve. “His leg was taken off right at the hip.”

Treatment

The doctors at Cooper University Hospital in Camden did not think that Rowand would survive, said Jarve.

Rowand had toundergo several surgeries and other procedures. He is confined to a wheelchair. He has been fitted with a prosthetic leg, but he cannot use it because of persistent scar tissue problems.
