The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported toxic chemical pollution from factories, power plants, and other industrial facilities rose in 2002 for the first time in five years. According to an environmental group, the EPA estimates of a five percent increase in toxic releases nationwide are greatly underestimated. The group thinks the amount of benzene and butadiene, as well as other carcinogenic chemicals released into the environment is actually much higher because the EPA relies on data supplied by polluting industries.
The group thinks that the public is exposed to much higher toxic air pollution levels than the EPA has acknowledged, citing a study finding benzene and butadiene levels in the air may be four to five times higher than official estimates. Benzene is a hazardous chemical that has been estimated to affect over three million workers and linked to cases of acute myeloid leukemia.
