Millions of bees were turned loose upon the countryside after a fatal trucking accident on I-35 in Lakeville, Minnesota.
Two semi trucks and two passenger cars collided on the interstate Monday morning, leaving two people dead, according to Fox9.
Kari Rasmussen, 24, was driving one of the cars and was airlifted to a nearby hospital before she passed away Monday evening. Pamela Brinkhaus, 50, was driving the other car and died on the scene.
Arren Straus was driving the tractor trailer that was transporting 140 bee colonies, containing 30 million honey bees, from Mississippi to North Dakota. The trucker was blown away by the site of the bees.
"I couldn't believe my eyes," he told the television station.
The bees hampered rescue attempts and several of the first emergency workers on the scene were stung. Eventually a fire hose was brought in to contend with them until bee abatement specialists were brought in.
Local fire chief Scott Nelson was amazed by the sight of the bees.
"I saw this big black cloud," he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I opened up my door and got stung in the face by a couple of bees."
The trucking accident caused I-35 to be closed for nearly eight hours.
