"Recalled Toys Made in China Contain Lead"

Approximately 35,000 Baby Einstein play blocks were part of a massive toy recall announced on Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission over concerns of unsafe levels of lead in toys made in China.

This recall—which includes a total of 544,000 toys—is the latest of several announced this summer and is part of a broader effort to clear store inventories of potentially harmful products.

“There will be more recalls because of lead violations, but we also anticipate that we will begin to see fewer and fewer of them as a big portion of the marketplace will have been tested. What you're seeing now is the result of a systematic approach to going through inventories,” said CPSC spokeswoman Julie Vallese.

Lead Exposure

The toys that have been recalled contain excessive levels of lead in their surface paint. Lead exposure in children has been linked to serious health effects including behavior problems and developmental delays.

Recalled Toys

In addition to the Baby Einstein Discover & Play Color Blocks, other toys cited in the recall include approximately:

  • 79,000 coin-shaped “Pirates of the Caribbean” flashlights—sold throughout the U.S.
  • 63,000 plastic green cups in the shape of Frankenstein's head—sold at Dollar General stores
  • 15,000 Totally Me! Funky Room Décor Sets—sold by Toys “R” Us
  • 10,000 wooden Pull-Along Alphabet & Math and Learning Blocks wagons—sold at KB Toys

About 192,000 key chains sold at Dollar General and 150,000 Winnie the Pooh and breast cancer awareness bookmarks and journals sold at retailers across the U.S. were also part of the Thursday's recall.
