A Louisiana jury awarded $5 million to the widow of a former contract worker at ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge plant who died of mesothelioma – a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
James Terrance worked as a contractor at the company’s plant in the 1960s, chipping paint with asbestos from pipes. Exxon began using contractors during this time to perform similar work.
According to the lawsuit filed by his widow, the company knew about the dangers associated with asbestos exposure as early as the 1930s and took measures to protect its own workers but not its contractors.
After four hours of deliberations on Saturday, the jury found Exxon solely responsible for Terrance’s disease.
“We’re very gratified,” said Lewis Unglesby, attorney for Terrance’s widow, Sadie Mae Terrance.
