Since the late 1960s, the number of asbestos deaths in the U.S. has continued to climb in numbers and is expected to keep increasing through the next decade, according to the government. Though government regulations in the 1970s reduced the use of asbestos drastically, asbestos is still used under heavy regulation and found in over 3,000 products. The high exposure to asbestos years ago continues to affect people because it can take up to 40 years between exposure and the asbestos death, which is why it is likely the number of deaths will keep increasing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said 1,493 people died from asbestos in 2000 compared to 77 in 1968.
