The EPA will begin cleanup of the W.R. Grace plant next week to remove a dangerous from of asbestos called vermiculite that has been present in the area for decades. The cleanup is expected to last at least a month.
Asbestos contamination has been identified at the plant, and the EPA is investigating the possibility that portions of the material could be in nearby yards or used as fill in driveways. The on-site coordinator for the agency said they are planning on explaining to the community what is being done to alleviate any fears.
The majority of vermiculite in the U.S. came from a mine near Libby, Montana. Inhalation of asbestos can cause deadly health problems and lung diseases. From the 1950s until 1989, W.R. Grace operated its Dearborn, Michigan plant.
