The family of a man who was killed in a helicopter crash last year has filed the first suit in connection with the incident.
The man, who was a news photographer, for a local Arizona news station was only one of the four Valley journalists killed in the crash on that fatal day.
Rick Krolak was working as a photographer for Channel 15 when the helicopter he was riding in suddenly collided with the Channel 3 helicopter.
Although the exact reasoning for the collision has yet to be determined, Krolak’s family has filed a wrongful death suit against the manufacturer of the helicopter, U.S. Helicopter Incorporated and pilot Craig Smith.
According to reports, the only information known about the crash has been based on a preliminary crash report that was issued by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The report claims that Channel 3’s helicopter was stationary when Channel 15’s was maneuvering and crashing into them.
“U.S. Helicopter knew or should have known that defendant Craig Smith was a reckless, dangerous pilot,” say the attorneys representing the family.
Aviation attorneys in Arizona say they expect several more suits to be filed regarding the crash and feel the Krolak’s is only the first of many.
