When FDA medical reviewer David Graham told lawmakers during a congressional hearing on the recall of Vioxx that drugs require stricter safety evaluations, he didn''t stop there. Graham named five other drugs currently on the market that he believes is also linked to serious safety concerns.
Graham said in written testimony that he has recommended the withdrawal of 12 drugs, two of which still remain on the market – Accutane and arthritis medicine Arava. In March 2002, Public Citizen consumer group petitioned the FDA for the immediate ban of Arava from the market because of the link to an “alarmingly high number of severe liver problems, including deaths, since it came to the market in 1998 and should be taken off the market immediately.”
