A French newspaper, Liberation, recently reported that a researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France complained that his Apple Mac Pro laptop emitted fumes that may contain benzene. The researcher, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he unpacked his new Mac Pro in early 2007 and noticed that it emitted a strong smell, and that about 10 days later, he experienced throat and nose irritation.
An online Apple discussion board also shows complaints by Mac users regarding "a new-car smell" and other suspicious odors when they started up their pre-2008 Mac laptops for the first time. Some laptop users reported dizziness, nausea or migraines after unpacking a new Mac Pro.
Apple, the multinational corporation based in Cupertino, California, has revenues of more than $20 billion per year for products such as their computers, iPods and iPhones. Apple spokesman Bill Evans stated, "We have not found anything that supports this claim [of benzene or other toxins in Mac laptops], but continue to investigate it for the customer."
Evans did not specifically state that benzene was not used in the manufacture of Mac Pros or other Apple products.
In 2007, Apple announced that all lines of its products would be manufactured completely free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).
Benzene is a solvent used widely in many products and applications — especially in plastics — in the U.S. and around the world. Benzene has been used for about one hundred years.
Benzene vapors can cause nausea and headaches. Benzene is a carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer in human beings. This carcinogenic status is confirmed by the EPA, the World Health Organization and OSHA.
