British health authorities have tightened warnings on popular antidepressants. Doctors have been urged to use the antidepressants sparingly, as well as to consider non-drug interventions like counseling.
After safety concerns with antidepressants continued to arise, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reviewed the medicines. They determined stronger warnings about the risk of withdrawal symptoms after ending a course of antidepressant treatment must be given.
Doctors were told to prescribe only the lowest recommended dose of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in most cases. It added young adults should be monitored closely as a precautionary measure when being treated with antidepressants. Reports of increased suicidality among young antidepressant users have raised concern and controversy over the widespread use of the popular drugs.
The MHRA did not recommend any type of antidepressant for the initial treatment of mild depression.
