Researchers in the UK warned in the journal Diabetes Care that on rare occasions, treatment with Avandia might cause a profound decrease in high-density lipoprotein, or the HDL good cholesterol, and an increase in fasting triglycerides.
Dr. Anita Sarker and colleagues from Addenbrooke''s Hospital in Cambridge wrote, “This represents a potentially serious adverse event that requires detailed evaluation.” Describing three Avandia patients with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, researchers described a sharp decline in blood levels of HDL cholesterol, which returned to pretreatment levels when Avandia was discontinued.
The researchers noted it was not clear how common the problem is but suggested a full lipid profile including HDL cholesterol be measures before starting, and rechecked about three months later.
