A recent study published the American Journal of Gastroenterology, isotretinoin, whose brand name is Accutane, can cause a number of inflammatory bowel diseases.
Accutane was introduced in America in the 1980s as a treatment for acne but there have been a number of serious side effects that have been associated with the drug.
Indeed, after poring over tens of thousands of medical cases in insurance databases, researchers discovered that those who had been previously exposed to Accutane were four times more likely to develop ulcerative colitis, a chronic gastrointestinal disorder. The research also revealed that increasing doses of Accutane raised the risk of the condition.
While the study found that there was little correlation between Accutane and Crohn's disease, there are still a number of other side effects associated with the drug, including potential birth defects and a possible increased risk of suicide.
The study further cautions that medical professionals prescribing Accutane as well as patients taking the drug should be aware of the potential risks it carries.
The makers of Accutane have stop selling the drug in America, citing competition from generic versions of isotretinoin, such as Amnesteem and Claravis, as the reason for the move.
