A man attempted to commit suicide in an UK courthouse after being convicted of assaulting an elderly woman at a nursing home where he worked. After hearing that he faced jail time and was found guilty, Thomas McKenna, 36, jumped over a 3-foot glass railing, plunging 40 feet into the marble floor.
Despite his intension to kill himself, McKenna was rushed to the hospital where he is reportedly fighting to survive. He suffered a fractured skull, pelvis and arm, and has 11 broken ribs. According to the medical reports, he is also suffering from internal bleeding.
McKenna's bid for suicide came after being found guilty of assaulting an 89-year-old woman suffering from dementia. McKenna worked at the Windsor Court care home in East Yorkshire where Nancy Horton resided.
According to reports, McKenna left Horton with severe injuries to her arm after violently pushing her down when she asked for a second piece of cake from the tea trolley. During the trial, McKenna denied assaulting Horton, arguing that she fell down after hitting him.
The judge found McKenna guilty, however, after an eye witness testified to seeing him assault Horton. “You have been convicted of a serious offense,” said the judge. “It involved an assault on an extremely vulnerable person.”
The judge continued,"Offenses against vulnerable people are extremely serious indeed. You were working in a care home in a position of trust.”
