"Kentucky Hospital Negligence Lawsuit"

A Kentucky jury awarded the family of a woman who died as a result of medical negligence $9 million in damages yesterday.

Jennifer Beglin, 40, underwent elective surgery at the University of Louisville Hospital in July 2003 and died three months later in October. Her family filed a lawsuit early the next year citing medical negligence on the part hospital and two of its doctors.

According to the claim, Beglin suffered severe blood loss during the procedure. However, a blood transfusion was delayed despite more than a dozen calls to the hospital''s blood bank just a floor beneath the operating room.

Jack Conway, the family''s attorney, said that Beglin suffered brain damage and eventually death because of the delay. The jury cleared the two doctors of any wrongdoing and placed the responsibility solely on the hospital.
