As with any medication, you should never stop taking Neurontin without first consulting with your doctor. Side effects may be severe if withdrawal is not done properly.
Side effects while taking Neurontin differ depending on the reason for taking the drug. For people taking Neurontin for treatment of seizures, possible side effects include blurred, dimmed, or double vision, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, involuntary eye movement, itchy, runny nose, lack of muscular coordination, tremor, nausea and vomiting.
Once seizure sufferers stop taking Neurontin, it is highly likely that their seizures will reoccur. It is also possible that they will occur with greater frequency than they did before taking Neurontin. The medication does not cure epilepsy; it makes handling the disease easier by preventing seizures while medicated.
People taking Neurontin for nerve pain may experience general weakness, nausea, swelling in arms and legs, lack of muscular coordination, accidental injury, diarrhea, dizziness, constipation, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, infection and vomiting. These side effects may worsen if the medication is not discontinued gradually.
Neurontin has also become popular for use in treating psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and bipolar disorder. Although this method of treatment is not yet approved, many doctors are finding Neurontin to be a successful treatment for people who have not had success with other psychopharmacologic medications.
In cases when Neurontin is used for mood disorders, it is particularly important that discontinuation of the drug is done gradually. People with mood disorders who stop taking Neurontin abruptly can experience withdrawal reactions that may be detrimental to their emotional stability. Side effects for people taking Neurontin for a mood disorder include the possibility of increased mania, agitation, paranoia, sexual side effects and depersonalization. Neurontin should only be stopped immediately in the case of an extreme side effect.
