Generic Name: Gabapentin

Neurontin (generic name: gabapentin) is an oral prescription drug that was approved by the FDA in 1994 for the treatment of seizures. Its manufacturer is Parke-Davis, a subsidiary of the global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. Parke-Davis is alleged to have illegally marketed Neurontin for about a dozen different "off-label" uses. Indeed, it has been estimated that 90 percent of Neurontin prescriptions are for off-label uses.

Uses and Indications

The FDA approval for gabapentin was broadened in 2002 to include its use as a treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia; that is, pain ("neuralgia") following the development of shingles. The two FDA-approved indications for Neurontin/gabapentin are dwarfed by the volume of its uses for maladies such as:

  • attention-deficit disorder
  • migraines
  • pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • bipolar disorders

Neurontin (Gabapentin) Side Effects

As is true of all drugs, Neurontin has many potential side effects. These include:

  • difficulty concentrating
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • hostility
  • hyperactivity
  • mood swings
  • swelling of extremities (hands, feet)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Neurontin and Stevens - Johnson Syndrome

A link between Neurontin and Stevens-Johnson syndrome has been discussed since at least 1998. This syndrome, normally very rare, is a skin condition in which the skin cells die at an unusual rate, causing the epidermal layer of the skin to separate from the dermis. A severe case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome can be fatal, and less-severe cases are very troubling and problematic; SJS can cause cornea scratching and blindness, and organ damage or failure.

Any individual who is being treated with Neurontin, for whatever reason, should be aware of the risk of developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the symptoms of which include:

  • coughing
  • diarrhea
  • fever
  • general soreness
  • headaches
  • intense inflammation/blistering of mucous membranes (e.g., in the mouth)
  • itchy skin rash that spreads rapidly
  • sloughing of the skin
  • vomiting
