Multaq® or dronedarone, a drug to treat atrial fibrillation, has been found to have numerous side effects. These include:
Other, more common, side effects of the drug are:
Multaq® has been linked to 387 reported adverse events since it was approved in July 2009 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) according to a drug watchdog group, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Of these 387 events, 24 people died, the institute said in a recent report.
"We have seldom seen a drug with so many issues in so many areas of its safety profile," the report says.
Multaq® should not be taken by patients who have severe heart failure or patients with mild to moderate heart failure that have recently been hospitalized or referred to a specialized heart failure clinic for the disorder. These patients, in a placebo-controlled study, had more than a two-fold increase in death when given Multaq®.
Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart beats in an irregular pattern. The heart may beat more slowly or quickly, but as long as the rhythm is regular it is said to be in normal sinus rhythm and not atrial fibrillation.
The heart of a person with atrial fibrillation does not work efficiently and does not pump enough blood out to the body.
Persons with atrial fibrillation are more likely to have strokes because the blood pools in the heart, increasing the chances for it to clot. The clot can then travel through the blood stream to the brain where it causes a stroke.
Multaq® works directly on the heart tissue. It belongs to a group of drugs called antiarrhythmics. While it is not known exactly how the drug works, Multaq® helps extend the time between occurrences of atrial fibrillation. The drug is meant to reduce the need for hospitalization in people with atrial fibrillation. People taking Multaq® may still experience atrial fibrillation, but the periods between episodes last longer.
If you have had serious reactions to Multaq® or someone you love has died as a result of taking the medication, you should seek the advice of a Multaq® lawyer. You may be entitled to financial compensation for your pain and suffering. Contact a Multaq® attorney today for an evaluation of your case.
