Multaq® Acute Liver Failure

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Multaq® might increase a person's risk of suffering acute liver failure. The agency based its information on reports it received from Multaq® patients that have been diagnosed with liver failure, two of which required liver transplantation.

Because of these patient reports, the FDA will change the drug's label to include information about the potential risk of liver injury. The drug has also been linked to serious heart-related injuries and kidney damage.

Dronedarone was approved in July 2009. It is used for patients that have experienced abnormal heart rhythms in the last six months. Although it has not been on the market for long, thousands of patients have been prescribed Multaq®.
