Update: Multaq® has been linked to severe liver injuries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be updating the drug's label to warn patients and healthcare providers about a possible risk of acute liver failure in Multaq® patients.
The term hepatic refers to something that "acts on or occurs in the liver." According to the FDA, several patients taking dronedarone (brand name Multaq®) have reported hepatic injuries, including acute liver failure. Two patients had to have their livers replaced via transplantation. Multaq® is a heart medication used for the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms.
Signs and symptoms of hepatic injury include a yellow tint to the skin and eyes (jaundice, unexplained fatigue, nausea, vomiting, change in behavior and confusion. Patients should be aware of these symptoms and should consult their doctor immediately if they begin to experience these or any other unusual symptoms while taking Multaq®.
Acute liver failure refers to a rapid decrease in the liver's ability to function properly. Liver failure usually develops slowly. But, with the case of acute liver failure, patients can lose liver function in a matter of days. When a person experiences liver failure, he or she is at risk of other life threatening complications, including excessive bleeding, severe infection and pressure in the brain.
The FDA has alerted healthcare providers and patients about the potential liver failure risk associated with Multaq®. The agency asks healthcare providers to explain the possible risk to their patients and to inform them of the symptoms. Patients should contact a doctor immediately if they develop any unusual symptoms.
Drug-related hepatotoxicity is the number one cause of acute liver failure in the U.S. Patients with acute liver failure will require aggressive treatment. For some, a liver transplant will be the only option. Acute liver failure is very dangerous and often results in death.
