Persons with congestive heart failure should not take Multaq®. This prescription drug (dronedarone) is prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, different types of abnormal heart rhythms.
The label insert of Multaq® carries a black box warning saying patients with severe heart failure should not take Multaq®. This is also true for patients with worsening mild or moderate heart failure that has required recent hospitalization or treatment at a specialized heart failure clinic.
Heart failure patients are divided into classes of severity defined by the New York Heart Association.
A black box warning on the package insert with Multaq® says that a greater than two-fold increase in death was found among classes II, III, and IV heart failure patients who took the medication in a large study.
Multaq® is contraindicated (should not be taken) in patients with mild to moderate (classes II and III) heart failure who experience new or worsening symptoms and need to be hospitalized or treated at a specialized heart failure clinic. These patients, like patients with Class IV disease, are at greatly increased risk of death if they take Multaq®.
