Dronedarone (brand name Multaq®) is prescribed to treat the irregular heart rhythms atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. A heart in atrial fibrillation beats quickly and irregularly. A heart beat with atrial flutter beats quickly but in a regular rhythm.
One 400 mg tablet should be taken twice a day with morning and evening meals. It should be taken about the same time every day. Patients are told to take the drug exactly as directed, to not take more or less than the prescribed amount, and even if they feel better and have felt well for a long time, to continue taking the medication. It should not be discontinued without consulting the physician.
The prescribing information includes a black box warning of heart failure in certain patients taking the medication. (Black box warnings are written within a black-outlined box on the drug label or package insert to emphasize for the physician and consumer an especially serious situation.)
The black box warning says the drug should not be taken by patients with serious heart failure or with heart failure that worsened and required hospitalization or referral to a specialized heart failure clinic. These patients are at a serious risk of dying from taking dronedarone.

According to the report, since the drug's 2009 approval it has been associated with 387 reported adverse events. These included 24 deaths.
Patients should tell their doctors about any of these potential side effects of dronedarone:
