MiniMed Insulin Pump therapy is used by hundreds of thousands of diabetics around the world. While wearing this cell phone-sized pump, a MiniMed Insulin Pump user can inject the insulin he or she needs at any time, at a steady rate throughout the day and night. This avoids the need for self-administering multiple insulin injections every day.

Since diabetics need to artificially replicate the body's normal delivery of insulin (both the 'background' level of insulin and the insulin that is necessary after eating), the easier the system for delivering the insulin, the better — as long as the system is effective and safe.
The MiniMed Insulin Pump is manufactured and marketed by Medtronic, a pioneer in the field of insulin pump therapy. Medtronic also makes the world's first insulin pump therapy system that integrates an insulin pump with a device that provides real-time, continuous blood glucose monitoring. This product, the MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time System, is available throughout the U.S.
The MiniMed insulin pump injection sites can include the abdomen, buttocks or thighs. These injection sites are the locations of the insulin delivery. A MiniMed pump user needs to use an insulin-delivery device with the pump, for the transfer of insulin from the pump to the body. Several such systems are available, and the most popular is the Quickset infusion set, also made by Medtronic.
The Quick-set infusion set is composed of a soft, flexible cannula that is inserted under the skin at the injection site. A flexible, spaghetti-sized (6-mm or 9-mm diameter) infusion tube delivers the insulin from the MiniMed pump to cannula an on into the injection site.
In July 2009, Medtronic recalled 60,000 of the Quick-set infusion sets that are used with the MiniMed Insulin Pump. These sets are called Quick-set infusion sets, and a defect in these thin infusion tubes may prevent the MiniMed insulin pumps from venting air pressure — a problem that could cause the pump to deliver far too much or far too little insulin, a very dangerous situation.
