Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pump REAL-Time System

As one of the newest innovations in diabetes management, the MiniMed Real-Time Insulin Pump is a small, easy-to-use device that continuously administers insulin to diabetics, as long as the device is worn properly and round-the-clock.

The MiniMed pump, which is also referred to as the Paradigm MiniMed Insulin Pump, is produced by Medtronic and is currently the number one insulin pump prescribed by U.S. physicians.

Advantages of the Paradigm Insulin Pump Therapy System

The MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Pump is as compact as a small cell phone or a pager and, according to Medtronic, gives patients the freedom to:

exercise without first eating
eat whenever they want (allowing them to diverge from rigid meal schedules)
ingest insulin discreetly
not have to inject insulin multiple times a day

Additionally, the MiniMed Insulin Pump can:

deliver more precise amounts of fast-acting insulin than syringes
vary the amounts of insulin administered, according to a patient's changing blood glucose levels and insulin needs
help patients achieve target levels of blood sugar on A1C tests
reduce the risk of severe diabetes complications, including nerve disease, blindness and kidney disease

Medtronic's insulin pump system comes with the following components:

a Paradigm Quick-set Infusion Set
a cannula (a spaghetti-sized tube)
a REAL-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS)
a OneTouch UltraLink Meter
a MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Pump (in model numbers 522 or 722)

The CGMS and OneTouch Meter are blood glucose monitoring devices: While the CGMS provides data trends of blood sugar levels and a safety alarm, the Meter regularly measures blood sugar and wirelessly transmits measurements to the pump device.

Disadvantages of the MiniMed Pump

To date, a number of patients have reported developing serious injuries after use of MiniMed insulin pump systems. The most common defects include:

Bends in the cannula that impede sufficient flow of insulin to patients
Disconnections between the cannula and skin or the cannula and pump that completely halt proper insulin flow

If diabetes patients don't receive adequate amounts of fast-acting insulin, they are at risk of developing hyperglycemia, dangerously low blood glucose. If left untreated, hyperglycemia can cause severe, irreversible health problems, including heart disease, blindness and kidney disease. The worst cases of hyperglycemia are fatal.
