The Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm 722 Insulin Pump is available from American Diabetes Wholesale for $5,260. The Minimed MMT 103 3.0ml Syringe/Resevoir, at 10 per box, can be bought from Hocks.com for the wholesale price of $34.19, compared to the retail cost of $42.83.
The pump is a cell-phone size device that the diabetic patient can wear on a belt or in a pocket. The MiniMed MMT 103 3.0ml Syringe/Reservoir holds up to 3.0 ml of insulin and when used with the pump provides the user with a continuous flow of insulin 24 hours a day. Depending upon the time of day or activities, such as before sleeping, eating or exercising, the wearer can push a button to regulate the insulin flow.
The insulin pump is an alternative that the diabetic can use instead of having to inject him/herself manually over the course of a day with numerous insulin injections. The continuous flow from the insulin pump helps to regulate the level of blood glucose in the body much more efficiently than manual injections. Of course, it eliminates the discomfort and inconvenience of having to inject oneself throughout the day.
The insulin pump also has a screen that shows in the form of a graph whether the level of glucose in the blood is rising or falling, allowing the patient to regulate the amount of insulin being provided with the push of a button.
