MiniMed Insulin Pump Models & Products

Since 1983, Medtronic (a medical device manufacturer) has been producing a revolutionary insulin pump therapy system that purportedly:

administers varying amounts of fast-acting insulin to diabetes patients
can alter the amounts of insulin delivered, based on the patient's changing blood glucose levels
gives patients the freedom to not eat before exercising, as well as to change up rigid meal and exercise schedules
delivers more precise amounts of insulin than syringes (and, thereby, helps patients better manage their diabetes)

The Medtronic MiniMed Insulin Pump comes in two models:

the MiniMed Paradigm 522, which can only accommodate a 1.76 ml reservoir
the MiniMed Paradigm 722, which can accommodate a 1.76 ml reservoir and a 3 ml reservoir

The MiniMed Paradigm 722, which holds up to 300 units of insulin, is recommended for patients who:

use more than 50 units of insulin per day; and/or
are expecting major life changes, including (not limited to) adolescence or pregnancy

Medtronic MiniMed Pump Accessories

The insulin pump therapy system comes with a(n):

Paradigm Quick-set Infusion Set and a cannula (a small tube placed under the skin to deliver insulin to patients)
REAL-Time Continuous Glucose Monitoring System, CGMS (that provides accurate blood glucose readings, glucose trend data and safety alarms)
OneTouch UltraLink Meter (that checks blood sugar levels and wirelessly transmits them to the pump)
MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Pump (that holds and delivers insulin to patients)

When using these systems, it's crucial that patients:

Only use them as directed
Regularly check each component of the system to ensure it's operating properly and that there is sufficient insulin in the pump's reservoir

2009 Recall of Quick-set Infusion Sets

Problems with one lot – Lot 8 – of the infusions sets sparked a nationwide Class I recall of the devices with the following model numbers:

MMT-359S6
MMT-359S9
MMT-359L6
MMT-359L9

Medtronic voluntarily issued this massive recall due to the fact that:

More than 200 patients, to date, have sought emergency medical treatment after experiencing pump defects.
Patients have reported that bends in cannulas and/or cannula disconnections have caused them to receive insufficient amounts of insulin (which, in turn, causes hyperglycemia).

Hyperglycemia is an extremely serious condition marked by dangerously low blood sugar levels. Without immediate treatment, hyperglycemia can result in:

blindness
heart disease
kidney disease
the need for limb amputation
death
