Along with the pump itself, one of the key components of the Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm system is the Quick-set infusion set, a disposable, easy-to-use device that implants a cannula (a small tube) beneath the skin with little pain.

Currently, the Medtronic MiniMed insulin pump therapy system is the leading pump system prescribed by doctors nationwide.

How to Use Insulin Pump Therapy Systems

It's important that diabetes patients use MiniMed insulin pumps precisely as directed because improper use of these devices can cause inadequate or excessive amounts of insulin to be delivered to patients.

Extreme amounts of insulin can, in turn, result in life-threatening health complications, including:

Hyperglycemia, extremely high blood sugar resulting from insufficient insulin
Diabetic ketoacidosis, the production of toxic acids (ketones) due to extremely high levels of insulin.

Proper use of insulin pumps is as follows:

Use the Paradigm Quick-set infusion set to implant a cannula under the skin (specific directions for use of this device are included with the device's packaging).
Calibrate the insulin pump to basal rate and bolus doses of insulin that are ideal for you (If you are unsure of these numbers, work with your doctor to figure them out).
Insert the pump into the cannula to begin receiving insulin.
Place the pump (which is the size of a small cell phone) in a pocket or clip it to your belt line.
Wear the pump round-the-clock.
Regularly check the pump to ensure that the cannula isn't bending and that the appropriate amounts of insulin are being received.

Additionally, it's vital that diabetics regularly check the reservoir in the pump to ensure that it always contains insulin. Prolonged periods of empty reservoirs can lead to the above-listed health complications.

MiniMed Insulin Infusion Pump Problems & Recall

In July 2009, Medtronic voluntarily issued a national recall of the following models of infusion sets due to possible defects in these devices:

MMT-359S6
MMT-359S9
MMT-359L6
MMT-359L9.

More than 200 patients have sought emergency medical care due to complications from defective MiniMed insulin pump systems. The most commonly reported defects with these devices have included:

Bent cannulas that result in insufficient insulin being administered
Disconnection of the cannula which stops the flow of insulin
